The Faceoff Academy Video Coach is FINALLY HERE!
by posted 04/01/2014

It’s hard to believe the Faceoff Academy is only 11 months old.  In that time we have prided ourselves on delivering the most advanced, comprehensive, and honorable coaching that the faceoff position has ever seen.  We have held over 50 FOA events, produced recruiting pipelines for our athletes, and have cultivated great relationships with some of the top high school and collegiate programs in the country.

After our 2013 season the three of us sat down and discussed what we believed was most important when it came to delivering the best coaching possible.  We realized that although we were visiting many cities and have had overwhelmingly positive feedback from players, parents, coaches and referees that in reality we could only teach so much in 3-hour stints at each event.

Enter the Faceoff Academy Video Coach.  We have produced a video that has nearly an hour worth of faceoff coaching information.  We have this broken down from a coach’s perspective in order to accomplish a multitude of things:

1)  For Coaches - Give every coach at every level an opportunity to see how we break down our faceoff training.  How we teach our warm up, our move sets, to  even our wing play.  Breaking it down in whistle variations, etc.  Giving every coach the power and knowledge in order to teach the basic concepts to his/her players.

2)  For Athletes - Now there is a video that teaches the PROPER form, PROPER technique, and PROPER way to faceoff.  We have provided the rules and basics for beginners, and the moves and skills sets for advanced players all in one video.

3)  For Parents - One thing we have always tried to accomplish at our FOA events has been teaching EVERYONE who attends.  We don’t want just the players to understand our coaching but we also want the parents in attendance to understand the position that their athlete is playing as well.  This video breaks down the rules and the overall “do’s and don’ts” of the position so that parents can better understand what is going on at the X.

4)  Referees - We understand that the game is exploding at a fast rate across the country and the faceoff position has evolved exponentially in the past few years.  This video describes the rules and even gives the example of a proper whistle cadence that can simplify the faceoff for officials.  This gives them much more power in what to watch when officiating the position.

5)  Faceoff Academy Events - We believe if every Faceoff Athlete uses our Video Coach and understands the basic concepts prior to attending our events it will allow us more time to dive deep into the more advanced techniques and allow the athletes to get even more out of our coaching.  We think of this video as our “fourth coach”, giving players the power to increase their abilities ahead of time and maximizing the in-person training we provide when we work with them at our events.

We have partnered with “Vimeo” to make this Video Coach as accessible as possible for download and viewing on every platform.  This means that you can download and play our Video Coach whether you use a Mac, PC, Tablet, iPhone or Android phone.  You can DOWNLOAD the FOA Video coach using this link:

 https://vimeo.com/ondemand/12443

We strived to provide the most straightforward and simplistic video possible in order to teach this position.  A lot of effort and thought went into creating it and we are confident it will help everyone in the sport who uses it.  ENJOY!

Faceoff Academy Video Coach

“Go Forward!”

The Faceoff Academy Partners with the MLL!
by posted 02/20/2014

BOSTON (Feb. 20, 2014)
- Major League Lacrosse, the premier outdoor lacrosse league, announced today that it has partnered with New York Lizards’ Greg Gurenlian’s The Faceoff Academy.

As an official partner of the MLL, both organizations hope to grow the sport of lacrosse, as well as draw attention to the importance of specialized positions.

To do so, MLL will produce a season-long weekly feature titled “At the X; presented by The Faceoff Academy.” Each post will recap how the individual faceoff specialists in the League fared over the weekend and rank them throughout the 2014 season, culminating with the specialist who has the highest winning percentage being crowned as the season champion.

“We are very pleased to partner with Faceoff Academy,” said MLL Commissioner David Gross. “Greg, Jerry and Chris do tremendous work in promoting the sport and with the new feature on the MLL website we will bring attention to an often overlooked, yet important position in the game.”

The Faceoff Academy is dedicated to developing elite athletes that are unchallenged on the draw, well-rounded on the field, and of the highest character.

Gurenlian and his team of fellow Major Leaguers Chris Mattes of the Florida Launch and Jerry Ragonese of the New York Lizards take pride in working with lacrosse players of all ages, helping them excel both on the field and off the field through a series of camps, events, and clinics all over the United States.

"Jerry, Chris and I are extremely pumped to finally be teaming up with Major League Lacrosse.  As Major League Lacrosse players who play at the highest level we take a lot of pride in teaching the Faceoff position at the highest level as well.  By working with the MLL we can reach more players and coaches than ever before and provide them with world class instruction.  This is also a great opportunity for us as MLL players to spend more time with our fan base which has given us so much over the years."

About Faceoff Academy

Established in 2013, The Faceoff Academy is owned and operated by Major League Lacrosse players Greg Gurenlian (NY Lizards), Chris Mattes (Florida Launch) and Jerry Ragonese (NY Lizards).  With weekly stops in cities all over the country The Faceoff Academy provides elite level Faceoff instruction to coaches and players at all skill levels.  The FOA runs youth clinics, High School Elite combines and an annual National Recruiting Showcase with collegiate coaches on staff.  You can find out more about The Faceoff Academy by visiting their website www.TheFaceOffAcademy.com or emailing them at  . FOA and ConnectLAX Partner up!
by posted 02/09/2014

The FaceOff Academy has signed a deal with ConnectLAX.com the Nation's Premier lacrosse recruiting service.  "We are so happy to join forces with ConnectLAX." Says Greg Gurenlian, Coach and Co-founder of The FOA.  "We worked hard this first year on showing everyone that we provide the absolute best FaceOff coaching in the world.  But that wasn't good enough for us, we want to make sure that the athletes we train have the BEST opportunity to play at the next level.  ConnectLAX blew us away with their recruiting platform."

What is ConnectLAX team recruiting?

Team recruiting maximizes the recruiting exposure of every player by linking their mobile recruiting profile to their team’s roster. ConnectLAX recruiting profiles put your player information at the fingertips of college coaches so they can evaluate your profile while watching you play. Coaches can easily find, evaluate and track any player that catches their eye. Through your recruiting calendar, coaches can easily follow your team’s schedule and see their prospects in person. Your ConnectLAX recruiting profiles gives you access to every college coach; that’s over 1,400 collegiate teams. Recruits can bookmark the colleges they are interested in and rank them within their profile, allowing their coaches to easily track their college preferences online. Recruits can find colleges that match them on and off the field here: Connectlax.com/colleges. Further, your one-time fee covers you through the entire recruiting process.

"When we say 'Go Forward' it doesn't just mean at the FaceOff X.  We want our athletes to Go Forward in life.  We want all of our players to get that chance.  It means so much to us in fact that we're paying the fee for EVERY athlete that has attended any of our events."  Every single player that is a member of the FaceOff academy will have their profiles paid for.

Existing members of The FOA can use this link to create their profiles and start learning about the site and all that it offers:

What is The Face-Off Academy?
by posted 07/19/2013

The Athletes of our 2013 Philly HS Combine
THE FACE-OFF ACADEMY

1)     The three of us have seen that everyone who has ever taken a face-off seems to be out and about giving lessons.  Some of the instruction is pretty good, some of it is bad, a lot of it is unethical, and some of it is out of date.  We’ve brought our ideas together to create a system of training that is fundamentally sound, cutting edge and encompasses the evolution of the face-off athlete.  We’re seeing more and more athletic players at the X now and these players need to be able to do more than just scrap for possession.  We want to cultivate and build face-off men for the next generation who can dodge, can shoot, can play great defense and can be a “Quarterback” at the X.  We want to develop players who can put their team in position as a leader of a face-off unit and as a leader of a team.  We want to teach the entire game and we want to start at the face-off X.  When we teach the moves and mechanics, we’ll teach them the RIGHT way.  Not how to cheat or how to get away with “what the ref gives you” but how to be a great player all-around.

 2)     We want to develop the game of lacrosse throughout the country and especially bring the game to the Midwest, South and West where we feel it has been neglected.  At each and every we will be teaching youth clinics as well as high school combines.  At every event, any and all parents and coaches are encouraged to come for free and participate in the instructions and discussions so that they can then use our knowledge to help better their own teams and organizations.  These tour stops won’t be just minor clinics but full scale “events” that we hope will draw whole communities to come and learn and get better.  If we can reach enough people who care, then we know that non-traditional hot bed lacrosse will improve exponentially.

 3)     The recruiting landscape has changed.  Players are being recruited younger and younger and it can be a scary time for young athletes as well as parents.  We want to use our site and our tour season to help educate everyone on the process of recruiting and how it works.  The great thing about face-offs is that any person could have the specific knack for it.  Any athlete from any corner of the country could have good hand speed, center of gravity and the ability to adapt and anticipate.  But many of these players in the non-traditional hotbeds slip through the cracks.  Our goal for these athletes is to give them a fair shot at being seen and looked at.

At every event we will have two parts:
We will start with a youth/Novice face-off skill clinic, teaching the basics, the ins and outs of the face-off in a detailed, fun and enthusiastic way.
We will then coach an advanced level/HS Recruiting Combine that will be developing high-level techniques as well as knockout style tournament play.  Highlights will be filmed and posted on our YouTube channel available for any and all including coaches to see.  Players will be given a numbered jersey so that they can be evaluated and followed on video.

At the end of the season we’ll evaluate all combine participants and hand select the top 100 athletes from our tour.  Those 100 will then come to the North East for a two day National Showcase.  This showcase will be taken very seriously and it will be intense and very competitive.  We will have college level referees attending the knockout portion of the competition.  Afterwards, the results will be sent to literally EVERY D1, D2, D3 and MCLA team in our database, we even have early commitments from coaches who will be attending.

 www.TheFaceoffAcademy.com

The FOA site has been built from the ground up with every possible thing we could think of to make it a centralized HUB for Face-off men.  We have news and articles written by Jerry, Chris and myself popping up every day.  We’ve created a way for athletes to reach out to us personally on twitter.  The FoGo forum has been created so face-off men can connect to discuss moves, sticks, stringing, wing play, etc.  Players can even ask us questions directly to get our opinions.  And finally, we’ve created a Free recruiting profile for players to announce their school interests, their stats, their club teams and schedules which will be password protected and blasted out to schools all over the country.  Coaches will have the ability to look at our site to see where players will be playing.  This makes it much easier to evaluate and recruit face-off athletes especially when the athletes are still a year or two too you to be allowed contact from a coach.

Basically the three of us as Pro Face-off men looked back on our years of development and made a wish list of what we would have wanted to make our journey easier.  We believe we’ve come up with exactly what is missing for many athletes whose dreams are to play in college.

Thank you for reading and if you have any questions or wish to help us better your team please email us back at

 GO FORWARD!
